Recently my college class had a Zoom meeting with Julie Daniel Davis about using Alexa or other smart speakers in our classrooms. This meeting just happened to also be close to Cyber Monday, so after receiving permission from my IT department, I went and purchase the Amazon Echo Dot for Kids. Amazon claims that this device is COPPA compliant, which is important when you are using it in a school. The first day I had it in my classroom, I had it on mute and didn't do anything with it. This allowed the kids to get used to the device being in the classroom without it going off all day. Next, I played some music during bus room. My next step was to set up basic reminders for our schedule so I don't have to say them. Setting up all of my reminders took about 5 minutes. our final exploration in the first week was to play some trivia at the end of the day. Other than when the device was being used, it stayed on mute. I work with 6th graders and I don't trust that they can control their impulses that well. In the coming week, we will be coming up with rules on how to use the device. I will probably have a rule that they need to check their question with me first then unmute, ask, and remute the device. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
